ROCKVILLE - THE NEW FUTURE OF A COUNTY SEAT
As one of Maryland's oldest towns - dating back to 1774 - Rockville was originally known as Hungerford's Tavern (which is also the name of a most popular landmark). A group of outraged patriots met to discuss the closing of the port to Boston and condemning the act. They issued a boycott of trade with Great Britain until the blockade was lifted in Boston. It was then that they appointed individuals to attend a statewide general committee which led to the First Continental Congress.
Rockville served as the County Seat as early as 1776 when Montgomery County was formed by a division of Frederick County. In the mid-1780's the surrounding community was know as Williamsburg and was a little more than a few homes with a saloon (tavern), courthouse and a local jail. Because of it's proximity to Rock Creek, Williamsburg was finally named Rockville in the early 1800's. It remained a very small community after becoming incorporated in 1860 and then again after B & O Railroad came to town around 1874. It wasn't until the city limits began expanding that the population began to explode - between 1945 and 1980 - when the population rose from approxmitely 7,000 to 45,000.
Now an historical and cosmopolitan city, Rockville is home to myriad Government offices, Research firms, Historic sites and Professional organizations. The historical and victorian county seat is home to beautiful cobblestone and brick sidewalks, mature trees, outstanding and colorful gardens, and largely restored 18th and 19th century homes.
