Germantown - Town With a Past and a Vision!
In the mid-1800's German business owners settled in the intersection of what is now known as Liberty Mill Road and Clopper Road. Travelers remembering the accent of business owners called the area Germantown and the name held. A co-conspirator in the Abraham Lincoln assassination, George Atzerodt, was captured in Germantown. John Wilkes Booth had given him the task of assassinating Vice President Andrew Johnson, but he fled to Washington, DC on the night of the Lincoln assassination after losing his nerve. He was captured at his cousin Hartman Richter's farm in Germantown and was later hanged the summer of 1865 in Washington DC along with David Herold, Lewis Powell and Mary Surratt.
During the past century, Germantown has experienced tremendous housing development - especially within the last 30 years. There are many communities that cater to all income types and Germantown has grown to unify all its residents. Further, the various communities range from an urbanized 'towncenter' feel to the large lot 'rural' homes. Even as an unincorporated city, Germantown families, homes and businesses are thriving - should the city decide to incorporate it would be one of the second largest cities in Maryland!
